Agriculture
Home Gardening
Objectives:
1. To expand the home garden project into new target areas.
2. To create an agriculture resource centre at CHO.
3. To start a pig and cow bank for the community on CHO land.
This initiative was set up in order to encourage Cambodians to support local farmers. Many people buy produce from Thailand as it is cheaper: however Cambodia has a lot of land that is not being utilized effectively. As part of it's work to improve the livelihoods of rural communities, CHO promotes home vegetable gardening by training, community and school demonstrations and other follow up support activities.
We also provide training in animal husbandry and health care.
School Gardening
Objectives:
1. Expand project to 2 districts in Banteay Meanchey and Battambang provinces.
2. Persuade Ministry of Education to agree to include agriculture in the formal school curriculum
in 2 districts in Banteay Meanchey and Battambang provinces.
CHO is concerned about the lack of agricultural and pastoral farming education in Cambodia as it does not currently feature in primary educational syllabuses. Although it is taught at university, the majority of children that CHO works with cannot afford further education. Therefore CHO currently trains teachers and teaches children in public schools across the O'Chrouv district about the importance of agriculture, so that children can use agricultural knowledge and skills to support themselves in the future.
